MEDICAL SCHOOL TO LOCATE IN SCRANTON
The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC)*, a northeastern Pennsylvania-based medical school with campuses in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Williamsport, has made tremendous progress with faculty and administrative recruitment, partnerships with local hospitals and businesses, a cooperative spirit with local colleges and universities, strong regional legislative support, improvements to temporary facilities and the addition of a beautiful new campus to the downtown Scranton area.

The College enjoys tremendous support from the local business community, especially Penn Security Bank as they have provided initial temporary space for administration and Lackawanna College as they have provided temporary space for the first two years of medical education. TCMC is funded by state dollars and a generous grant from Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

To date, TCMC has recruited 26 full time employees, including 12 full time faculty members, many of which will move to the area with federal funding for research projects already in place. The faculty has completed the curriculum detail, including course descriptions and lecture specific schedules. Thanks to the cooperation and support of local colleges and universities, temporary research space is being made available for TCMC faculty until the permanent building is completed.

The applications are in process both with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) for degree granting authority and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for preliminary accreditation as a medical school. TCMC is moving forward with the PDE site visit which has been scheduled for the end of April. The TCMC team has spent long hours working with Highland Associates to complete designs for the College’s permanent facility. First and foremost are the educational needs of students and faculty with all classrooms and small group rooms easily accessible and comfortable with state of the art technology. The exterior appearance of the structure will use natural materials native to this region of Pennsylvania and as you can see from the picture, the building will complement the wonderful architecture in downtown Scranton. More building information can be found on the Dean's Blog at http://newmedicalschool.blogspot.com. For many, the opportunity to learn from community-based medical leadership, to give back and serve their own community, is only a dream. To provide local students this opportunity, local businesses, physicians, individuals and hospitals have already funded 20 partial scholarships for students. If you would like to donate to the scholarship program, please go to "Support our Progress" on the TCMC website at www.thecommonwealthmedical.com
